Using technology in the Classroom

Students in year 3/4 Segaran have been investigating ways they can use different apps and programs on their iPads to increase their basic skills in mathematics and literacy.

In mathematics, students have been using 'Hit The Button' to increase their automaticity in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

As a class, students mapped out all the basic skills they need to assist them to be more confident, competent and engaged with challenging mathematical problems. From this list, students began collecting and recording data about their current knowledge and skills, and began using hit the button each day to practice and increase their scores.

To assist students with their development in Maths, they have also been using the maths game Prodigy. Prodigy is an adaptive game based learning tool that focuses on core maths topics. Students in 3/4S have completed maths tasks set by their teacher both at school and at home and have begun building their virtual character and tools. Students have also used data collected from this app tutorials to extend or consolidate their learning.

As well as using apps and games to increase their knowledge, students are also learning how to display, record and share their learning in a digital portfolio using a learning folio on the app Class Dojo.

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students

We are travelling towards the middle of the term, which seems amazing!  There has already been so much great learning occurring in all the learning spaces here at Our Lady Queen of Peace.

This is also an opportunity to reflect and name what we all look forward and work towards in 2019.

Parents have a significant influence on their child’s learning.   On average a child will spend 75 – 85% of their waking hours outside of school.  Therefore, parents’ engagement in the education of their child is pivotal in enabling them to achieve their potential.  Parents can help...

Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all our swimmers who participated in the SAPSASA Swimming Carnival yesterday.  All swimmers contributed confidently in all their swimming events.  They should all be very proud of their fantastic effort, excellent behaviour and the way in which they showed great support to their team members as they competed in each event.

Congratulations to Ivy Avina and Harvey O’Brien who have been invited to the State Trials for Freestyle and Breastroke events later this term.

Lent

Next week we will begin our important cycle in the Church Calendar: Lent.  We will be celebrating Shrove Tuesday with an abundant supply of pancakes from our wonderful parent volunteers.  Many thanks to the families who have donated items for our pancake morning next week.

Chocolate Fundraiser

The P & F Committee would greatly appreciate your support of the school's first 2019 fundraiser by selling a box of chocolates for our school.  This is one of our most successful fundraisers and all proceeds contribute to purchasing valuable resources that benefit our children's learning.

A note will be distributed shortly so if you are happy to support this fundraiser please complete and return it via your child's class box and we will arrange a box of chocolates to be sent home with your child.  Alternatively you can call into the Parent Room after 3.00pm each afternoon and collect your box to sell, OR email Christine at cwhicker6@bigpond.com with your child’s name and classroom and we will arrange a box to be sent home.

This year we have 2 varieties: Freddo Frogs/Caramelo Koalas OR mixed Chocolate Bars.  Each box contains 60 bars or frogs/koalas @ $1.00 each.

We would be most grateful if all families could help support this fundraiser.

Thank you, Christine Whicker

Parenting Ideas

The latest blog by Michael Grose is on ‘The Language of Independence Building’.  Reliability is closely connected to responsibility and other aspects of independence. Every child over the age of five, at the eldest, should do something that someone else relies on whether it’s looking after a pet, clearing the meal table or emptying the garbage on a regular basis.
