Poetry - Class 6/7 Mr Leigh Turbill

This term our theme in English is poetry.  We have learned there are many different techniques that writers use in poems.

We are currently working on ‘personification’, which is when human qualities and actions are used to describe non-human things.  We also learned that we should not use personification in all of our writing because it becomes more difficult for the reader to understand, and it loses the impact that it had.

Then with all our knowledge, we set out to create our own poems using personification techniques.  Afterwards we edited them and typed them on our laptops to finish.  Here are a few examples.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We welcome Ethan (R/1W), Chloe (2OP) and Hailey (3/4G) to our school community.  We wish our new students and their families a very happy start in their new school community.

Since the beginning of term, students have been busily training for Sports Day and this week we will finally gather and celebrate Sports Day this Friday, 2 November at the Port Adelaide Athletics Club.  There have been meetings for the House Teams, practising chants, songs, developing closer relationships as they begin to focus on their work together as a community of team members.  It has been a wonderful opportunity to view how well the children work together for the ‘common good’!  Whilst there may be focuses on doing well for their House, there is also a sense of being together with a goal – to participate well, have fun and support one another, not just in their own House Team but for others as well.

There have been a number of skills that the students have been focusing on:

Sport/PE Update

Coles Sports for Schools

At the beginning of the year the Coles Sports for Schools again took place around schools in Adelaide.  We had an amazing response by all students, parents and community members collecting an outstanding amount of vouchers.  This enabled us to purchase a number of various sports equipment for our school sports program, gross motor program and playgroup.

Some of the items we were able to purchase were:

  • Netballs
  • Footballs
  • A compressor
  • Gross Motor Kit (including a variety of different equipment)
  • Sports measuring Tape
  • Tunnel (for playgroup)

All of these items will be widely used by all the students.

Thank you to all those involved and the P& F for organising this fundraiser.

Great Information for Parents & Carers

Parenting Ideas: BlogTeach kids not to jump to conclusions.

Michael Grose this week discusses Resilience, “Slowing down your thinking and avoiding jumping to conclusions is a great resilience skill that can be improved with practice. As a parent, you can model this type of thinking, reciting the possibilities out loud so your kids can see how it’s done.”
